How do I learn English so I can use it?

どのように英語を勉強したら英語を使えるようになるの？

I have never worked using anything other than my native language, Japanese.

私は母国語の日本語以外を使って仕事をしたことがありません。

I could not hear, understand, read, or write English even though I studied it in school.

私は学校で英語を勉強したにもかかわらず英語を聞いたり、理解したり、読んだり、書いたりすることができませんでした。

I found myself doing only what I could do without using English as much as possible.

気がつけば、なるべく英語を使わずに、できることだけをやっている自分がいました。

Is this what I want?

これが私の望むものなのか？

It cannot be good.

いいわけがない。

So I decided to start studying to teach Japanese to people abroad in my native language.

そこで、海外の人に母国語で日本語を教えるための勉強を始めることにしたんです。

Before I opened the reference book, I thought, "It will be easy because it will contain only the obvious."

参考書を開く前は、"当たり前のことしか書いていないから簡単だろう "と思っていました。

I thought it would be easy.

簡単だろうと思っていたのですが

In fact, it was not.

実際は、そうではありませんでした。

I didn't know anything about it.

何も知らなかったのです。

I don't understand Japanese even though I use it everyday.

日本語は毎日使っているのに、よくわからない。

I had never studied grammar and pronunciation in detail theoretically, so I could not understand even if I read reference books.

文法や発音を理論的に詳しく勉強したことがなかったので、参考書を読んでも理解できなかった。

It's strange that I can use Japanese but don't understand it.

日本語は使えるのに、理解できないのは不思議です。

I feel it is related to the fact that I learned English in school but cannot use it.

学校で英語を習ったのに、使えないことと関係があるような気がします。

I spent a day researching what methods are available to teach foreigners to use Japanese and what is the most efficient way to do so.

外国人に日本語を使えるようにするには、どんな方法があるのか、どんな方法が一番効率的なのかを1日かけて調べてみました。

I found many things that I would like to incorporate into the way I study English.

英語の勉強方法に取り入れたいと思うことがたくさんありました。

The day was a hint to think about how to learn by learning about both learning and teaching.

学ぶこと、教えることの両方を知ることで、学び方を考えるヒントになった一日でした。
