英会話というとレッスンをイメージするかもしれませんが、

私が行ったのは

英語を日常的に使っている海外の方とのビデオ通話です。

When you think of English conversation, you might imagine lessons.

What I did was a video call with an overseas person who uses English on a daily basis.

10月と11月に１回ずつ行いました。

It was organized once in October and once in November.

相手は

日本語を勉強している２人で、

長い人は、

テキスト上でのやりとりを9月から続けています。

かれこれ3ヶ月。

They are both studying Japanese.

The longer one has been texting with me since September.

It has been 3 months with that person.

2ヶ月目に入る頃には

普通の日本人とやりとりをしているレベルになってきて

「一体どうやってこんなに上達したのやら…」

とよく思うことがありました。

By the second month, he was at a level where he was communicating with normal Japanese people.

I often wondered, ‘ How in the world did he improve so much? ‘

私は全く英語はできません。

テキストだからなんとかしてるものの、

実際会話となったら目も当てられないのは重々承知しています。

I don't speak English at all.

I was able to get by because I was using textbooks.
In fact, I am well aware that when it comes to conversation, I am not very flattering.

でも、

「今度、電話しませんか？」

というお誘いを受け、

すごく緊張しながらも電話をしてみることにしました。

But...

‘ Would you like to call me sometime? ‘

I was very nervous, but decided to give him a call.

「日本語を読んだり書けたりするのと、話したり聞いたりするのとではまた違うだろう。。。会話続くかな？？」

と不安も多少ありました。

I'm sure it's different when you can read and write Japanese than when you can speak and listen to it. Would I be able to continue the conversation?

I was a little anxious.

実際話してみると

そんな心配は吹き飛ぶほどの日本語力を彼は習得済みでした。

In fact, when we spoke to him.

He had already mastered the Japanese language to the extent that such concerns were blown away.

会話の中で、

フィリピンは複数の言語を習得するのが当たり前だという話をしてくれました。

In our conversation. He told me that it is common for Filipinos to learn more than one language.

「地元はビサヤ語ですが、標準語はタガログ語を使います。」

‘ The locals speak Visayan, but the standard language is Tagalog. ‘

「英語は小学校の時に習っていて、今は仕事で使っています。」

‘ I learned English in elementary school, and now I use it at work. ‘

日本人の私からしたら衝撃的。

As a Japanese, I am shocked.

彼が普通に日本語で説明してくれたことにも驚きましたが、

内容的にも衝撃を覚えました。

I was surprised that he could explain it to me in normal Japanese,

but I was also shocked by the content.

よく第二外国語を習得すると

要領が分かってるから第三、第四、、、

と増やしやすい

Often when you learn a second language,

you know the gist of it,

so it's easy to add a third, a fourth, and so on.

ってどっかで聞いたことがあります。

I have heard this somewhere.

フィリピンの彼は完全に独学で日本語を習得していて

学習計画も完全にオリジナル。

Philippines, he is completely self-taught in Japanese. His study plan is also completely original.

「なんでこんな言い回しを知っているの？」

‘ How do you know these phrases? ‘

「なんでこんなに日本語で話せるの？」

‘ Why do you speak so much Japanese? ‘

そこで、彼にいろいろ質問をしてみることにしました。

So I decided to ask him a lot of questions.

なかなか英語で発話できない私からすると

「なんで会話できるんだろう？」

From my point of view, as someone who can't speak English very well, I'm thinking.

‘ How can I have a conversation? ‘

と不思議でたまらないのです。

I can't help but wonder.

調べる時間

考える時間なんてない。

Time to find out.

No time to think.

瞬時に反応して発話する。

Instantaneous reaction and speech.

なぜ、こんなことをそつなくこなせるのでしょうか？？？

How is it possible to do all this without a hitch?

母語しか話せない私にとって

母語以外の言語を習得して話せることは

本当に驚くべきことだし、不思議でたまらない。。。

As someone who only speaks my native language,

it is truly amazing and strange to me to be able to learn and speak a language other than my own.

ということを彼に伝えた上で

以下の質問を投げかけてみました。

After telling him that,

I asked him the following questions.

• 日本語能力試験のテキストでは扱われない言い回しも聞き取れていましたが、それはなぜですか？

　　I was able to hear phrases that are not covered in the JLPT text, why is that?

• 話すスピードがゆっくりな日本人なら内容全て理解できるものなんですか？

　　Is it possible to understand all the content if it is spoken at a slower speed?

• 瞬間的に言葉を発することができるようにどんな勉強・経験をしましたか？

　　What studies/experiences did you have to learn to be able to speak at a moment's notice?

彼から返ってきた内容は…

What he returned to me was…

３つとも同じ内容かなっていう内容でした。

The content was that all three were the same.

なので、

「動画を見て話せてしまうものなんですか？」

って質問してみると

So.

I asked, ‘ Is it something you can talk about in your videos? ’

という答えでした。

聞けば聞くほど不思議でたまらなくなってきたので

Udemyの英会話講座(セール中)を取ってみることにしました。

The more I heard about it, the more I couldn't help but wonder,

so I decided to take an English conversation course that was on sale and at a discount.

To do so

Keep listening even if you don't understand something.

Listen desperately.

It is important to be aware of this.

ということが説明されている回があって

「なるほど〜」

って、一人で感動していました 😆

I found a place where it was explained to me that ‘ I see…’ .

I was impressed by myself 😆.

彼の「YouTubeをよく見てる」という回答の意味は、

日本語を分かりたいという気持ちを強く持ちながら

自分の知りたい日本に関する動画をたくさん見ていた…

His response, ‘ I watch a lot of YouTube ‘ meant that he watched videos of what he wanted to know about Japan with a strong desire to understand Japanese.

ということだったのかな？？

ということを理解できました。

Is this what you mean?

I finally understand.

納得！！！

日本語学習サポートの関係で知り合いました方がもう1人います。

There is another person I met through the Japanese language study support.

アメリカの女の子。

American Girl.

彼女はまだ日本語能力検定を受けたりそのための勉強はしていませんが、

短いフレーズであれば日本語でやりとりできます。

She has not yet taken the JLPT or studied for it, but can exchange short phrases in Japanese.

２ヶ月前はほぼ英語でのテキスト交流でした。

But Two months ago, the text exchange was almost entirely in English.

彼女は便利なアプリをいろいろ知っていて

今時女子です。

I am a so-called ‘modern girl’ who knows many useful apps.

「Do you like music？」

って質問が来たかと思うと

And to think I got a question like this.

「I might have an idea ! Do you use Apple Music ? I’ll send you my profile. Send me yours !」

horomiおばちゃんはやっとやっとです。

I am an auntie and I can barely keep up with her.

Apple Musicのプレイリストを共有しあうことで、

彼女はハードロックが好きなんだってことが分かったし、

共通の話題もできて盛り上がりました。

By sharing our Apple Music playlists with each other. I found out that she likes hard rock music, and It was a great opportunity to have a common topic of conversation.

お互いdeep L を通してのテキスト交換だったけど

絵を描くことが好きだったり

動物が好きだったり

We exchanged texts through deep L, but we both liked drawing and animals.

やりとりをすればするほど共通点を見つけることができました。

The more we interacted, the more we found common ground.

彼女といつか通話できたらな〜

I hope I can call her someday.

と思ってもフィリピンの彼ほどの日本語力は彼女にないし、

かといって私も英語を聞くしかできない状態だったので

ずっとテキストのみでやりとりを続けていました。

However,

she did not have the same level of Japanese as he did in the Philippines, and on the other hand, I could only listen to English.

We continued to communicate only by text the whole time.

そんな時期、

職場の後輩で語学が好きな子がいたので

ちょいと誘ってみることにしました。

Then I remembered that I had a junior colleague at work who liked languages.

I decided to ask her out.

実は彼女も絵を描いたり物を作ったりするのが好きで

In fact, she also likes to draw and make things.

私はずっと気になっていた人の1人です。

I have been interested in her for quite some time.

誘ってみるとちょうど彼女も

英語で話す機会を欲していたようで

参加してくれることになりました。

I invited her to join us and she just wanted a chance to speak English.

She agreed to join us.

趣味で英語を勉強しているっていう内容を

今まで詳細に聞いたことはなかったのですが、

聞いてみるとガチ。

I had never asked her about her hobby of studying English in detail before,

but when I asked her, she was very serious.

ある意味で独学のプロなので、

英語の勉強に関しては困ってはいなかったけど

それを実際アウトプットをして話す機会が少ない部分に課題を感じていたようです。

In a sense, she was self-taught and had no trouble with her English studies,

but she felt that she had few opportunities to actually output and speak what she had studied.

Instagramのグループメッセージ機能を使って

3人でメッセージ交換を始めました。

Using Instagram's group messaging feature, the three of us began exchanging messages.

今まで1対1でやりとりしてきたので

私以外の2人でどんなやりとりをしているのか…

といった流れを見ていくのが新鮮でした。

Since I had been communicating one-on-one,

it was refreshing and interesting to see how two people other than myself were communicating.

私は真面目に返してるんだけど

後輩的にはツッコミどころ満載らしく

結構楽しんでくれているようでした。

I was serious in my response,

but from the point of view of the junior staff at work, there was a lot of poking and prodding.

She had a great time.

数週間続けた後、

「3人で今度通話してみない？」

と切り出してみました。

After a few weeks of this.

‘ Would the three of us like to talk on the PC sometime? ’ I asked.

途中、画面共有をして話すこともするかなと思い

Skypeで接続することにしました。

We decided to connect via Skype, thinking we might do some screen sharing and talking along the way.

でも….

接続が不安定で3人が見えることはありませんでした。

誰かしらビデオOFFになってしまうという事態。。。

However, the connection was unstable and all three could not see each other.

画面共有なんかより

相手も表情が見えない状態で慣れない言語の会話をするのは

結構やりにくいということに気づかされました。

Screen sharing is not necessary.

More importantly, I realized that it is quite difficult to speak in an unfamiliar language without being able to see the other person's facial expressions as well.

会話といっても

私は相変わらず発話できず、たまに単語を発したり

あらかじめ作っておいたSiriの翻訳ショートカットアプリに話しかけて表示された英語を読んで伝える。。。といったことしかできませんでした。

I am still unable to speak, even when it comes to conversation.

I could only utter a few words occasionally, or read the English displayed by speaking to a Siri translation shortcut app that I had created in advance.

後輩はというと

普通に英語で会話をしていました。すごい！！！！

As for my junior,

she was speaking normal English. Amazing ！！！！

2人の会話は私も聞き取れたし、

たまに分からない部分があっても雰囲気でなんとなく分かりました。

I could hear what they were saying, too.

Even if I didn't understand some parts sometimes, I could sort of understand them by the atmosphere.

そんな2人の様子を見ているのがすごく楽しくて

ずっと聞いてたいなと思っていると、、、、

I really enjoyed listening to their conversation and wanted to listen to it all the time.

「どうしよう。次何話そう」

といった日本語の声が後輩から聞こえてきました。

' What am I going to do? What shall we talk about next? '

came a voice in Japanese from the junior.

元々テキスト上でのやりとりの時も

「会話が続かなくなるのが悩み」

ってことは聞いていたので、

During our exchange through texting,

she once asked me for advice, saying, 'I can't carry on a conversation ’.

今回もそういうことなのかな〜

と思って適当な英単語を言ったり簡単な日本語を話したりして

私はアメリカの彼女に絡んでました。

I wondered if this was the case this time as well,

so I spoke to her in America using only English words and some simple Japanese.

後日、

後輩から分析レポートのようなテキストメッセージが来ていて、

読んでみるととても興味深い内容でした。

Later on.

I received a text message from this junior that looked like an analytical report.

I read it and found it very interesting.

井戸端会議ってよく何時間でも話してますよね。

Well-wishers often talk for hours.

あれって一体何を話しているんでしょう？？

What the hell is that thing talking about?

「ちょっと知ってる〜？」

‘ Hey, hey, you know what? ‘

「何？何？」

‘ What? What? ’

こんな出だしから話題が発展していく印象があります。

I have the impression that the topic will develop from such an outset.

昔私も

サイゼでドリンク片手に7時間話し続けたことがありました 😂

I used to talk for 7 hours straight in a restaurant with a drink in my hand 😂.

数週間前、

後輩と初めてランチをしました。

A few weeks ago, I had lunch with this junior for the first time.

今まで仕事が終わったら即撤収だったので

帰り道にご飯に行ったりすることもなかったんだけど

なんとなくその日はランチに行きたい気分になり

2人で回転寿司屋へ行きました。

I used to return home after work without stopping.

But somehow I felt like going to lunch that day.

We went to a sushi restaurant together.

気づけば5時間話してました。

Next thing I knew we had been talking for five hours.

よくある話。

This is a common occurrence.

話って尽きないし

湧いて出てくるもんだと思い込んでいるけど

実は違うってことを再確認できました。

I had assumed that the topics were endless and would just spring up.

However, this experience reaffirmed that this was not the case.

今回の3人のグループ通話で

「話題が無くなるってなんだろう。。。」

ということについて真剣に考えてみると…

In this three-person group call,

‘ What does it mean to run out of topics? ‘

We thought seriously about this question.

私は単純に英語力が低いので

「単語覚えてないから出てこないのかな〜」

「フレーズも全然覚えてないもんな〜」

くらいにしか感じていなかったんですが、

I am simply not a good English speaker, so I only thought the following.

‘ I don't know why I can't remember the words. ’

‘ I don't remember any phrases at all... ‘

後輩いわく

「英語を話すことに意識を向けすぎて話題自体を深堀ることができなかった」

と反省していたんです。

The junior reflected on the following.

‘ I was so focused on speaking English that I was unable to delve deeper into the topic itself. ‘

「もっと反射的に話す状態にもっていかないと…」

ということまで言っていました。

She even said, ‘ I need to get into a more reflective state of speaking... ‘

普段永遠と続く会話は、

【無意識に】話せる話題を選んで相手に質問を投げかけているんだそうです。

She told me that the conversations that usually go on forever are [unconsciously] choosing topics to talk about and asking questions to the other person.

だから

【無意識に】【反射的に】話せないと

永遠と話せるようにならないってことなんだって！！！！！

So we have to speak [unconsciously] and [reflexively] to be able to speak forever. ！！！！！

マジか！！！！(ﾟoﾟ;(ﾟoﾟ;(ﾟoﾟ;

Seriously.

確かにUdemyの講座でも

日本語で変換するステップをカットして

英語で理解して発話できるようになる…

と言われていたなと思うと、

急に後輩の分析もつながってきます。

Indeed, the course I attended also said the following.

‘ You will be able to understand and speak in English without going through the step of converting in Japanese.... ‘

Suddenly her analysis is also connected.

無意識以前のレベル。 Pre-unconsciousness level.

Udemyの講座で言われていた

【習得】に必要な聞く・話すの部分で

今まで何をしてきたかを振り返ってみると…

I decided to look back at what I have been doing in the areas of listening and speaking that are necessary for [mastery] that was mentioned in the course.

英語のリスニングは特に苦手意識があったので

フレーズになったときに単語同士がつながったり

発音の違いに注目できるように洋楽を聞いて歌詞を見ながら歌えるように取り組んできました。

I had a particular weakness in English listening,

so I have been working on being able to listen to Western music and sing along with the lyrics so that I can pay attention to the connections between words when they become phrases and the differences in pronunciation.

はじめは参考書を使って歌詞に聞こえた音をメモしたり、

区切られる部分に印をつけたりしていましたが、

At first, I used a reference book to note the sounds I heard in the lyrics and to mark the sections to be separated.

最近では、

Apple Musicの歌詞を表示させて何度か聞けば歌えるようになってきています。

I recently learned to sing the song by displaying the lyrics on Apple Music and listening to it several times.

ただ、「発音に注目して言えるようになっているだけ」で

内容を理解しようと必死に聞いてはいないな…という部分が分かってきました。。。

I just focus on the pronunciation and being able to say it.

I found that the following issues remained.

I am not listening hard enough to understand the content

話す練習には

AIアプリのTalking Marathonを使って瞬間的に短いフレーズを言えるようにしようと

思いながらもなかなか毎日継続できずにいます。

I plan to use the AI app [Talking Marathon] for speaking practice to be able to say short phrases instantaneously, but I have not been able to continue daily.

短いフレーズのシーン設定なのでそこまで内容を理解しようとしなくても分かってしまいます。

The application is set up to have conversations using short phrases, so you don't have to try to understand the content that much to understand it.

分からない英語でも内容を理解しようと必死に聞く

Listen hard to understand the content, even if I don't understand English.

というトレーニングが完全に不足している…ということに気付かされました。

I realized that this kind of training was completely lacking.

動画だと映像に意識が行ってしまうので、

With video, you're so focused on the image.

Potcastで作業しながら英語を聞く習慣を取り入れてみようかなと思います。

I think I will adopt the habit of listening to English while working with Potcast.

とりあえずやってみてどんな変化が自分の中で起きるのか…

I'll just do it for now and see what kind of changes it makes in me…
